Like Google Chrome, Mozilla makes progress on Providing Background updates for Firefox

Google Chrome provides background updates for its web browser automatically without seeking any user permission. This concept has been acknowledged by Mozilla also and it is planning to bring in this concept for its Firefox browsers.

Working on this module, Mozilla plans to bring this service in action in the coming year. Earlier it had planned to implement this service for its Firefox 10 versions in the early next year. But the deadline is not yet confirmed, as pointed by Mozilla development team for the silent updates. One of the developers working on this project, Ehsan Akhgari states “At this point, we’re not quite sure which version of Firefox this will land in…. We’re working to land it as soon as is safely possible,”

He explains that if all parts of silent update are not covered for Firefox 10 in the scheduled time, then the next release would be around March 13 for Firefox 11 and in worst case, April 24 for Firefox 12.

Ehsan is the member of the silent update project team, which is responsible for completing the work as soon as possible. For this, he has brought in a new way to stage the downloaded Firefox update in separate Windows directory, which will be then swapped with the older edition on logging in.

There are many more steps yet to be taken before launching the background updates.

This project is being worked on for more than a year. In the early stage, it was predicted that this service will be comfortably implemented in Firefox 4. But, when working on it on real grounds, the project is taking more than expected time.
