Mozilla Moves Ahead With Firefox silent updates

Mozilla is moving ahead on adding silent updates in Firefox. Mozilla is planning to integrate this silent update mechanism to the Firefox 10.

However, a Firefox engineer working on this project, Ehsan Akhgari, made it a point of concern that this plan may fail. He explained it in a blog post, “At this point, we’re not quite sure which version of Firefox this will land in…. We’re working to land it as soon as is safely possible,”

As per mentioned on the Mozilla’s official website, the prime concern for Mozilla is Firefox 10. Most of the project dues are already covered and have appeared in the released version of Firefox8. Rest of the inclusions are to be implemented in the upcoming Firefox 10 version.

Anyhow, if the silent update parts fail to include in Firefox 10, then they will be included in the next updated version of firefox, Firefox 11 and Firefox 12.

This silent update project was started long ago and was approximated to be included in Firefox 4, which was to be released in March 2011. However, this was delayed due to some reasons.

Including the silent update feature in Firefox, it would become the second browser with this feature, Google chrome being the first.

With help of the silent update feature, Mozilla can deploy the emergency security fixes itself.

Mozilla allows its users to upgrade their Firefox versions to the updated ones including silent update parts. But, this every-six-week update release schedules have bothered its users. Hence, most of the Mozilla Firefox users stick to their older Firefox versions.
