Technology News – Facebook faces-off Koobface gang

KoobfaceFacebook fame has garnered admiration and appreciation from the masses but few facets of fame are less than favorable. And the factor that tops the list of disfavor privacy being frequently invaded and compromised. Of late according to a technology news source, Facebook has tracked a malicious software that has intruded through the Facebook profiles and had infected thousands of computers. The Koobface computer worm had been reported to have come into active existence in 2008 and over time spread itself like an epidemic through the malicious activities of sending fake messages to the friends of the victim member on Facebook and other social networks.

In January, Facebook pin pointed six Russians who were allegedly running the two million dollar scam trapping the members of the social networking site since past three years. Facebook also publicized the photo identity and revealed their office addressed that was traced to be in Central St Petersburg. Facebook had taken this step out of utter acted out of dissatisfaction towards the law enforcement agencies that had yet not gained much evidence to accurately investigate the Koobface gang.

For this act Facebook had been criticized for being reckless in disclosing the details of the alleged members of a gang that masterminded the Koobface worm. Kaspersky Lab, the well known name in the field of antivirus has disapproved Facebook approach and projected their views saying that the line of attack that was planned for naming and shaming of the gang rather made it more difficult for being arrested for their alleged crimes.

According to Telegraph the real quoted words of Stefan Tanase, a senior security researcher at the Kaspersky firm were that, “Naming and shaming can stop companies like Facebook really dealing with things like Koobface. I’m questioning whether these guys will ever get arrested now,” Tanase added that the identity exposure had identified the people in person and to save their misdeed, the Koobface gang has eliminated even the slightest online trace that would have helped the investigators take a lead towards trapping the wrongdoers and hence gathering evidence has become all the more cumbersome. The words were quoted as, “Yes, it hurts investigations. When criminals find out they are being investigated, they will be doing everything they can to preserve their freedom”.

Kaspersky was not alone to find Facebook’s approach a bit too hasty; F-Secure have also voiced the same opinion. Antivirus firm, F-Secure claims that the naming and shaming approach of Facebook is not commendable as it “undermines any efforts to get these guys arrested”. Now, it is only waiting for time when this malevolent Koobface gang comes within the grip of the investigating agencies.
